Granted, THE INITATION doesn't compare favorably to the best slasher films like HALLOWEEN or the original Friday THE 13TH, but even so it's a surprisingly successful horror film buoyed to some degree by a mystery element that, if ultimately unbelievable, still adds immeasurably to the usual formula of young people being killed by a crazy murderer.Daphne Zuniga stars as a sorority pledge whose usual college problems are magnified by a long history of recurring nightmares.

This 1984 horror film stars Daphne Zuniga, Vera Miles, James Read, Hunter Tylo and Clu Gulager. Zuniga (Spaceballs) plays Kelly, a college student who is having bad dreams about an incident that occurred when she was a kid.

I watched this one last night on DVD, was sure that I had seen it on VHS back in the day but no, I hadn't. There is quite a lot of plot so I'll skip my usual summary, it was written by somebody who went on to do TV soaps and that does show here, not necessarily in a bad way.

The Initiation was directed by Larry Stewart, who started his career as an actor in fare such as Captain Video and the 1952 adaption of the Quality Comics character Blackhawk: Fearless Champion of Freedom. In 1976, after arguments centered around budgets and the concept that television productions were happening more in the west than the east of the United States, Larry became the leader of the new Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

A smarter than usual college slasher with an actual plot and mystery to solve this time around. Usually, it seems like these movies start off by listing out all the possible death scenes and building the film around those, but this movie takes the opposite approach.

Troubled Kelly Fairchild (Daphne Zuniga) is one of the new pledges at a college sorority. She is haunted by a recurring nightmare and Peter suggests participating in his sleep research.

Kelly Fairchild (Daphne Zuniga) is a member of the Delta Ro Kai sorority with a haunted past. She has a recurring dream about a man sleeping with her father, and burning.

About half a reel into the film I was asking myself "Is this 'Sorority House Massacre'"? Mix parts of "Sorority House Massacre","Chopping Mall",and "Hell Night" and you have "The Initiation".
