Reviews

At the beginning, Sony Pictures Animation ought to have realised that the animation/live-action crossovers don't really work and just started with a fully animated CGI Smurfs movie. It is definitely better than its predecessors because everyone looks and acts like a cartoon which is a consistent tone.

This was the third big screen movie for the little blue gnomes, but it does not directly follow the previous films, it is a reboot and fully animated movie, no live-action at all, and I was hoping, from more positive reviews by critics, it would be better, directed by Kelly Ashbury (Shrek 2, Gnomeo & Juliet). Basically, in Smurf Village, the Smurfs live peacefully among themselves and their leader is Papa Smurf (Homeland's Mandy Patinkin).

So I watched this in glorious 4KUHD and it didn't let me down...fun movie.

Watched this film again after two years and I still enjoy it. This film really got me into The Smurfs Franchise.

Growing up with the 1980's Smurfs cartoon as reruns, and having been a younger teenager when the first two live-action Smurfs films were released (which creeped me out at the time), I went into this one not really knowing what to expect. While this film's CGI animation might not necessarily suit it well, and there were a few cringey things such as the thumping electronic background music and the "smurf selfie" scene which will no doubt become horribly dated a few years from now, Smurfs: the Lost Village really isn't too bad.

Once again from Sony Pictures Animation movies - the animation is fantastic with great character designs that stay faithful to Peyo's comic series of the same name and does a great job bringing them alive in 3D form, but the hard work from the animators is once again wasted, because all of previous works by the same studio suffer the same problems like the story, characters, dialogue and especially the music (being very bland and forgettable and putting very famous songs has become a tradition for Sony) and all of the weak aspects combined together makes Smurfs: The Lost Village look very beautiful, but unfortunately it feels very mediocre at best and yet at the same time i still consider it an improvement over the awful live-action/animated hybrid Smurfs movies.

Perfectly agreeable fantasy adventure with a rich sense of location in that dark woods full of strange creations from the POV of three inches off the ground. There really isn't much unusual about it, it's just what you'd think a Smurf's movie should be (if made for television that is).

This movie is nothing big, but it's an enjoyable easy watch. It's basically all about Smurfette finding herself and grappling with her dark origins.

The movie opens with a heartwarming scene: The Queen Smurf has just finished scavenging a week-old deer carcass in the Dark Forest. She takes to the sky for a while, then descends upon a village with all her might and fury.
