In the 1590s, Wessex owns "tobacco plantations in America".

There were neither tobacco plantations nor English colonies in America in the 1590s.

The Roanoke colony at North Carolina (called Virginia at the time) failed in 1587, and tobacco monoculture did not begin in Virginia until after 1607.

The filmmakers probably knew this.

Juliet's "blood" on the tomb moves around from shot to shot.

When Will and Viola are in bed together the morning after their first tryst, the bed sheets are pulled to provide concealment in such a way that only someone not in the bed (and off camera) could physically do.

When 'William Shakespeare (I)' (qv) and Viola are in bed together the morning after their first tryst, just as Will falls off the bed you can see that he is wearing a pair of black shorts.

Just after Lady Viola tears off her wig, accidentally revealing herself to be a woman, Sam (the actor playing Juliet) is shown standing next to her, his dress hanging down normally.

However, in the next shot of Sam, his skirt is up around his shoulders, back where the Master of the Revels had raised it a few minutes earlier, erroneously believing Sam to be the woman in disguise.

The audio for the choirboys at the church service is a line ahead of the visual.

When 'William Shakespeare (I)' (qv) and a musician are at a dancing event, the musician is holding a lute with fret markers on the fingerboard, but these were not used on instruments until the 1890s.

When Romeo drinks the poison, he first opens the bottle, says what he has to say and in the next shot he opens the bottle again before he drinks the stuff.

At the marriage of Viola and Wessex, the church bells are being change-rung.

Change-ringing was invented by a Cambridge printer, Fabian Stedman, in the late 1600s.

'William Shakespeare (I)' (qv)/Romeo tends to Ned/Mercutio by kneeling to Mercutio's right, and, in doing so, violates the first "rule" of stage acting, which is to never hinder the audience's view of the stage or the actors.

The sound of the tambourine, played by 'William Shakespeare (I)' (qv) with the musicians at the dance where he meets Viola, continues after he has stopped playing.

However, given that Will was not originally part of the music group, it is reasonable to assume that there is a second tambourinist somewhere.

In the final credits, the clouds in sky don't move or change shape at all for the whole length of the shot; revealing that a still picture is used in the background.

'William Shakespeare (I)' (qv)'s Romeo & Juliet is generally thought to have been performed for the first time in 1595 or 1596.

_Shakespeare in Love (1998)_ (qv) has it performed in 1593, but this is part of the "secret history" which the film is "discovering".

Philip Henslowe ('Geoffrey Rush' (qv)) is depicted as being constantly in debt, yet the opposite is true - money lending was one of his professions.

The filmmakers probably knew this.

Reviews

The film many great performances with Joseph Fiennes standing out as Shakespeare. Its a very funny and warm film.

This film won 7 Oscars (including "Best Picture") and was nominated for 6 more. With an original script by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard, this is a historical imagining of the time in William Shakespeare's (Joseph Fiennes) life when he wrote "Romeo and Juliet".

Shakespeare in Love (1998): Dir: John Madden / Cast: Joseph Fiennes, Gwyneth Paltrow, Geoffrey Rush, Judi Dench, Colin Firth: Intriguing film presenting Shakespeare within Shakespeare by suggesting his love for a woman but it also depicts his devotion to his work. He is played by Joseph Fiennes and he is at work on his new play called Romeo and Ethyl.

This was the best movie I've ever seen! I shed tears for this story and this story showed me love!

I add myself to many of others here who uncovered the real problem of this movie - it's overrated.I know well and esteem all the actors here, yet this is not a movie worth an Oscar for their performance.

The 1998 Best Picture Winner, Shakespeare in Love has suffered from the "didn't deserve it" curse. Sometimes, a movie is remembered not on its own merits, but on what it beat out for Oscar's top prize.

Our two protagonists are Will Shakespeare (Jospeh Fiennes), struggling playwright with a bad attack of writers block and in need of inspiration, and Viola De Lesseps (Gwyneth Paltrow) an innocent but aristocratic young beauty. She disguises herself as a man in order to tread the boards and explore her love with the poetic prose of her favourite playwright and suddenly his inspiration returns, from which is borne Romeo and Juliet, possibly the greatest and most tragic love story ever to make the stage.

I have been meaning to see this movie for a long time, and in fact at my video store, it is still on the over-night listings, but it is stuck in a corner where all of the older overnighters are kept. I guess I started putting it off when all of the hype over the awards that it won came out, but in my opinion, this is one of the few movies that deserved the awards that it won.

Shakespeare in Love is the film i adore the most and beyond countable measure. It is the single most enchanting, mesmerizing, poignant, passionate, breathtaking and awe inspiring film i have ever had the pleasure to see.
