Goofs

During the performance of the song Big Bottom, just as David sings the lyric "The looser the waistband", his girlfriend Jeanine is visible standing on the side of the stage.

She didn't join the band until much later in the film, so she shouldn't even be with them.

This error only shows up on the widescreen version because she's on the left edge of the screen.

While David and Nigel normally play guitar, they are both playing bass during Big Bottom because that's what the song requires (it's a bit of a musical joke).

At the time the film is set, it was common for British rock stars to be mid-Atlantic "fake Americans".

This could explain Nigel's pronunciation of "semi" and Derek's "zipper".

Also, note that Jeanine says "airplane" and not "aeroplane".

Exit was also pronounced 'egg-sit' rather than the British 'x-it'.

When Nigel comes back to the band and argues with David, Jeanine's scarf changes position twice.

When the band is paying a visit to 'Elvis Presley' (qv)'s grave, the grave is in a wood.

The real grave of Elvis Presley is in a paved garden, with a fountain right behind it and facing a wall.

During the 'Recording Studio Meltdown' sequence, David begins playing with a white Stratocaster.

In the same shot he switches to a Sunburst stratocaster and then back to a white Stratocaster in seconds (Special Edition only).

In the hotel lobby, Nigel and Mick switch places on either side of David between shots.

During the "Stonehenge" song, Nigel's microphone, a Shure SM-57, changes back and forth between having a windscreen and not having a windscreen.

On 'Elvis Presley' (qv)'s tombstone, his middle name, Aron, really is spelled as "Aaron" (just as it was on his birth certificate).

Throughout the film, 2x4's are visible through the windows in shots of the band's interview in front of the castle revealing that it is just a facade.

During "Rock and Roll Creation", when Derek is trapped inside the pod, a roadie is supposedly hammering on it at one point, but clearly not making contact at all.

In the scene where the band goes to the "RECORDING INDUSTRY CONVENTION" the subtitle is claiming the location to be Atlanta, Georgia; while the scene in the background is clearly the famous Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles, and an old RTD (now the MTA) bus circa 1983 is driving by.

David Kaff's position during the "new album cover revealed" scene (acknowledged by the crew on the Criterion Collection DVD commentary.

) During the record company convention scene, herpes sores can be seen on the band member's lips, which aren't there in most other scenes.

This is because of a deleted subplot involving the band members having sex with members of another band touring with them and they get the disease from one of the members of the other group (acknowledged by crew on Criterion Collection DVD commentary).

Before the Jazz Odyssey scene, David and Viv are discussing the amended (and much shortened) set list.

David, when running down the list says "Heavy, Hole.

" rather than saying "Heavy Hole" as has been stated here before.

This can be seen as a mix up between two other Tap songs, "Heavy Duty" and "Hell Hole", but in reality David is referring to the two songs separately, in a sort of shorthand (using only a portion of each title) as he runs down the list of songs they might be able to play.

During the rehearsal scene where the album "Smell the Glove" first arrives, the horns of the skull stage prop in the background are either missing or attached.

The band's tour goes from the Eastern USA to the Western USA.

The scene of the band discussing the "zodiac" dress style at an airport is supposed to be set with the band somewhere around the midwest USA (since it is supposedly two hours to Colorado from there and they are touring from west to east), but they are clearly at the LOS ANGELES airport in this scene (identifiably by the "Theme Building" visible outside the terminal windows.

) The stagehand seen throughout the movie (Wonderful Smith) is wrongfully credited as the janitor.

Reviews

It's funny to read the few comments here such as those saying that "School of Rock" was a great film about Rock and Roll. That pretty much sums up the limits of some of the viewers, unfortunately.

A mockumentary about the trials and tribulations of an 80's band past their prime. Rob Reiner directs and acts as the director of this fake film.

Rob Reiner, known for a while as Meathead, finally made his directorial debut with what is probably the most famous mockumentary of all time. "This Is Spinal Tap" (officially spelled Spın̈al Tap with a dotless I and umlaut-bearing N) depicts a really dumb heavy metal band singing mindless, head-banging music.

As far as comedies go you may find wrier stuff but few that is wry about being dumb and vacuous but spirited for that. This is a cult film by now, especially in heavy metal circles.

A classic. Some people actually thought this was a real documentary and that Spinal Tap was actually a band.

Time for too much ******* perspective. Strange to see even one 1 star review!

Mockumentaries can be a lot of fun, and this was one of the early movies in t he genre. The film mocks the entire culture surrounding rock stars, exposing how vapid these people are.

How much more black could this movie be? None.
