I arrived in Kings Cross 4 months after Billy and lived in the same street (Victoria Street) that ran behind Surf City. I personally knew all the characters in this book, and lived through it all, (including Vinces little brawl).
Although I was a little too young to remember 1964, (I was born in 1959) this book is an absolute must for anyone interested in discovering or just revisiting the vibes from 1964 Australia particularly Sydney. A beaut read!!!.
...but it's still available from Pan MacMillan in Australia for less than AU$20.
This is the most accurate view of life in sydney during the sixtys. Forget all the others , this one has sex, violence, and stacks of ROCK AND ROLL!
Much the same as his earlier book. An attempt to be creative in the telling didn't add anything.
What an amazing book, from start to finish, Billy tells of street life in the early 60's music industry in Australia. It was the start of an amazing life lead, right up to super stardom.
