From Cebu in central Philippines, Yoyoy went to Manila to try his luck in recording in middle of 1970s. He signed with Plaka Pilipino Records and his first single "Mag-Exercise Tayo" (Lets Exercise Every Morning) became a hit in 1977 which launched his career.

Daughter, Hanna Villame, is also a singer and actress.
