Yorkshire-born actor and comedian, who began in amateur theatre. He joined the BBC in 1927, first acting on radio before becoming newsreader for the BBC Northern Region, and, in 1941, on the National Broadcast. Between 1942 and 1945, produced radio drama. In 1946, made his theatrical debut at the West End in London. Sporadically on screen from 1954 and best-known on TV as pensioner Walter Bingley opposite Irene Handl in "For the Love of Ada" .
