He was awarded the OBE in the 2000 Queens Millennium Honors List for his services to drama.

He was diagnosed with leukaemia in 1996 but is now recovered.

Three children: Pascale , Rafe Spall and Mercedes.

He and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban co-star Gary Oldman have both played the character of Rosencrantz: Oldman in Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead and Spall in Kenneth Branagh s Hamlet .

This makes him the second actor to play Churchill twice, in two otherwise unrelated productions. The first was Robert Hardy , who played the role in several films over the course of twenty-five years. Spall and Hardy appear together in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire . The latter also features fellow Churchill portrayers Brendan Gleeson and Gary Oldman.

Has portrayed Winston Churchill in 2 films, first in Jackboots on Whitehall and secondly The Kings Speech . Both films were released in the same year.
