A solid-built, physically-imposing US-born black performer, Sledge Hammer was a veteran of the adult film industry with a 19-year career. He was born on February 9, 1973 as Marland Anderson. He began his work in the sex industry in 1995 at 22 years old. Possessing powerfully-built features and a cocky smile anytime he appeared on set, Anderson appeared in over 800 films. First starting out with buff physical traits and braided hair, Anderson gradually underwent changes over the years, later switching between shaven and flat top hair styles. Anderson was taken to the hospital and was under a coma after EMT's successfully revived him. Complications involving massive swelling in his brain and the reported unlikelihood of Anderson regaining consciousness led to his mother requesting her son to be taken off life support on April 13, after five days in the hospital.
