He was a soldier in the Welsh Guards regiment who fought in the Falklands War. He was severely burned when the HMS Sir Galahad was hit by Argentine missiles. He sustained disfiguring burns to his face and hands, and unseen psychological scars as well. He was the subject of two moving documentaries "Simons War" and "Simons Peace" which showed his long, slow recovery and his traumatic adjustment to life after the army. He has since founded a charity "Weston Spirit" which tackles issues of social exclusion in young people, both able-bodied and disabled.
He was awarded an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1992 Queens Birthday Honours for his charitable works with the Weston Spirit.
He was awarded the CBE in the 2016 Queens New Years Honours List for his services to charitable services in Cardiff, South Glamorgan, Wales.
