Sharlto Copley was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, to Linda Stocks and Bruce Copley, a former university professor. His childhood dreams of acting were put on hold for many years when his television production company was one of few in his native South Africa granted licensing to create content for broadcast. Rather than acting in front of the camera, Copley found himself the businessman running the production behind the scenes, becoming South Africa's youngest television producer at age 25. It was during this time that he met a then-teen-aged 'Neill Blomkamp' . He now continues to split his time between his native South Africa and Hollywood, pursuing more opportunities in front of and behind the camera.
He was a huge fan of "The A-Team" growing up and got to play one of them in the 2010 adaptation.
He is in a relationship with South African supermodel and actress Tanit Phoenix Copley beginning of January 2012 and have bought a house together in Los Angeles. Sharlto proposed to Tanit on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, on the 28 March 2015. They got married on 15 February 2016, in Cape Town, South Africa.
He believes he was named after Thaddeus Sholto, a character featured in a radio production of "The Sign of the Four" - a Sherlock Holmes story.
Good friends with Director Neill Blomkamp. They attended the same high school.
Didnt start acting until he was thirty-five.
