The well-worn phrase "Tall in the saddle" is certainly one easy way of describing and then immediately married his ex-wife's mother, Dorothy, who was a few years older than him. An extended battle with cancer finally claimed the 72-year-old actor in 1983 at a Gainesville, Georgia, hospital.
