Often mistaken for actor Karl Malden.

Irish distant cousin of Anne Lockhart.

He and his third wife, actress Patricia Herd , are supporters of the League for Crippled Children in Los Angeles. Wife Patricia is a past President of the organization and he an ambassador with the March of Dimes.

According to Charles Ziarko in his article on Richard in the film magazine Classic Images, June 2008, the actors father fought in the South Pacific during WWII, developed elephantiasis, and died of his illness within a short time. Richard kept the flag from his fathers military funeral.

Via his work on "Star Trek: Voyager" , Richard plays the gutbucket for the intergalactic country jazz group, "The Enterprise Blues Band". Formed in the late 1990s, the band has released two CDs of primarily original songs.

One disappointment was losing the role of the boss in the film Nine to Five to Dabney Coleman.

Son Richard Jr. became a personal trainer and gym manager; daughter Erica, a Fulbright scholar, found a legal secretary career and is a sometime poet.

Appeared in a stage production of "Death of a Salesman", with his wife Patricia Herd , at the Ventura Court Theatre.

As he bears a strong resemblance to Karl Malden , he once guest-starred on Maldens TV series, "The Streets of San Francisco" . The men have also both portrayed Gen. Omar Bradley at different times.
