New York City politician.

Bred racehorses in Ireland after being forced out of politics.

Elected Coroner of New York City in 1874, but was charged with killing his opponent on election day. His murder trial ended with a hung jury.

Resigned as Tammany Hall boss after the 1901 elections, when Tammany officials were voted out of office. This was the end of his political career.

Leader of the Fourth Avenue Tunnel Gang, one of the famous gangs of New York. When he got involved in politics, he opposed Boss Tweed, but later joined Tammany Hall under John Kelly. After Kellys death, he was Boss of Tammany Hall from 1886-1902. He was considered the most ruthless of all the Tammany bosses, though not as blatantly corrupt as Tweed.
