Rey Valera

He received the Lifetime Achievement for Music in the 8th Tinig Awards from The National Press Club.

When Viva Records sought to revive the career of Sharon Cuneta as a singer, it was through an album of Valeras hits called "Sharon Sings Valera" in 1992. Cuneta always mention Rey Valera whenever she has a concert, owing a big part of her success to the famous singer-songwriter who composed her launching hit, "Mr. DJ".

In 1993, he was elected as one of the board member of Filipino Society of Composers, Arrangers, and Publishers (Filscap).

He has received numerous awards and citations, among them, Most Popular Recording Artist of 1981, the title "Juke Box King of the Year" in 1981, the 1982 Presidential Award as "King of Tagalog Songs," 1982, 1983 Entertainer of the year, 1983 Most Outstanding Recording Artist and Most Popular Singer/Entertainer.

An Lifetime Achievement Awardee in the 18th Awit Awards Dangal ng Musikang Pilipino given by The Philippine Association of Recording Industries.

He plays guitar, electric bass guitar, piano and keyboards.

In October of 1978, he received his first Gold Record Award for single entitled "Naaalala Ka". At that time, he e wrote the song "Sorry Na, Puwede Ba" for Rico Puno while doing his first album.

Represented the Philippines in the first Asean Song Festival held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in October 1981.

TV Personality, comedian, and fellow Bulakeo Bert Tawa Marcelo persuaded Rey to make a comeback in live performances and join him in a series of concerts called "Hatid Saya" in Europe and Middle East.

In 2000, he joined forces with Freddie Aguilar , Mike Hanopol , Vehnee Saturno , and formed the group SAGA (Songs And Generations After). The group recorded one album, and performed one major concert in Canada. It was their first and last concert as SAGA, and the group disbanded months later.

While in high school, he and his brother formed a band called "The Electric Hair". It started his recording career in 1977 and stayed for seven years with the group.

He wrote "Ako si Superman" ("I am Superman") supposedly for Rico J. Puno. He ended up recording the song which launched his solo career. It was former Record Producer Adel Ardaza and former Vicor Executive Chito Ilacad who gave Rey his chance to sing "Ako Si Superman". Chito was also the one who decided that Rey be the one to sing his own compositions.

Started as in-house producers of Vicor Records in 1979. He was later appointed vice president for artist and repertoire in Vicors newly opened sister company, Blackgold Records.

One of his initial projects was to make a song for the 12-year-old Sharon Cuneta. The song he composed, "Mr. DJ" launched the young singers career. It was followed by his song, "Kahit Maputi na ang Buhok Ko.".

Aside from Sharon Cuneta , he also composed songs for Rico J. Puno (Sorry Na, Pwede Ba", "Daigdig Ng Ala-ala"), Geraldine ("Pangako"), Pol Enriquez ("Ayoko Na Sa Yo") and many more.

His contemporaries are Rico J. Puno , Hajji Alejandro , Nonoy Zuiga and Marco Sison. Since 2002, the group are doing a series of concerts called "Greatest Hits", highlighting the music of their own time. They also launched a VCD recording of their concert. The group continues to perform both locally and internationally.

In July 2005, he recorded the album "Panghabangbuhay" with his childrens band called Saling Ket, and they have been performing together ever since.

Rey Valera quit showbiz at the peak of his career at 1984 when an impostor was using his name and was committing crimes, among them were carnapping and rape. The list even extended to marrying different women, and even petty crimes like "borrowing" money and personal items, all under Rey Valeras name. He made a comeback in 1988 sporting long hair so that his impostor (who had kinky hair), would have a harder time posing as him if the impostor ever resurfaced. This chapter in his life inspired him to write, "My Fans Are in Trouble", with the lyrics depicting his helplessness to protect his fans from the impostor that is abusing them.

Has no formal music background. When he submitted his song at Vicor in Raon Manila, he was an accounting student at the Far Eastern University.

His signature, "Ako Si Superman", was originally composed by Rey in the English Language with the title, "I Will Try To Make You Smile" for his sweetheart.

His composed "Mr. DJ" while in a jeepney he was commuting from the office.

The first song that Rey used in a movie was "Tayong Dalawa" (Both of Us) for the movie Stepsisters that Lorna Tolentino and Rio Locsin starred in 1979.

He wrote the song "Maging Sino Ka Man" (Whoever You May Be) for women who worked in bars and nightclubs. It became a hit and was even made into a movie.

Rey composed the song, "Kahit Wala Ka Na" (Even When Youre Gone) when Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion separated. Rey submitted the song to Viva (then home studio of Sharon and Gabby) as an inspiration for Sharon. But Viva shelved it. Two years later, Sharon asked the song and recorded it for her movie, then titled "Single Mother" which was renamed "Kahit Wala Ka Na".

He quit school during his 4th year college at the Far East University and worked in Japan.

His best selling albums were "Walang Kapalit" , "Rey Valeras Greatest Hits" and "Hello".
