Began as a professional actor at the Oldham Repertory Theatre in 1954.

Was nominated for Broadways 1975 Tony Award as Best Supporting or Featured Actor for "Sherlock Holmes."
Gaunt, sinister-looking British character actor, often in shrewd or eccentric roles, but equally at ease in light comedy. A familiar villain of British TV from the 1960s. Best-remembered on screen as the silent assassin Vargas in Thunderball . Acclaimed on stage as Professor Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes at the Aldwych Theatre in London and as Horatio in Hamlet at the Old Vic.
Was cast as Consul Seron in Doctor Who: The Keeper of Traken, but dropped out and was replaced by John Woodnutt.
Has acted in both The Doctor Who Franchise and the Eon James Bond film series.
