Character actor and theatre director. Made his reputation on the classical stage (Iago, Mephisto, Don Carlos) and in modern plays by Tennessee Williams, Max Frisch and Jean-Paul Sartre. Post-war, variously ensemble member of the Hamburg Thalia Theater and the Berliner Schlopark- and Schillertheater. In films often played heavies or military types.
