He was awarded the Australian Centenary Medal in the 2001 Queens New Years Honours List for his services to leadership in Australian higher education and for being a leading academic.
He was awarded the AC (Companion of the Order of Australia) in the 1976 Queens New Years Honours List for his services to Educaton.
He was awarded the CBE in the 1967 Queens Birthday Honours List for his services to Education. He was Principal of Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia.
