When casting for the radio series for "The Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy" radio show began, it was requested that the voice of The Book have a "Peter Jonesy sort of voice". After three or four people (including Michael Palin ) had turned it down, the search for the Peter Jonesy sort of voice narrowed in on Peter Jones himself. He said numerous times that he was quite bewildered by "Hitch Hikers" itself, and even more by the cult following it gathered.
Prior to the broadcast debut of "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" , he filmed an "introduction" sequence which was used for a test-screening of episode 1. This is the only time he appeared on-screen in the Hitch Hikers series. The video is included as a supplement on the DVD release.
He had two sons, including Bill Dare ; and a daughter, Selena Carey-Jones , with his wife, Jeri.
