French actor, born 1 January 1925 in La Broque, France, died 14 December 2011 in Klosterneuburg, Austria. He was married to Christa Ludwig.
His first two marriages ended in divorce. He is survived by his wife, Christa Ludwig whom he married in 1972; his son, Philippe; and a granddaughter.
He studied violin and voice before becoming an actor with the Comedie Francaise in Paris, France.
During World War II, he was a member of the French Resistance against the Nazis and was imprisoned briefly in Paris, France.
