Originally a high-school drop out, Bergin returned to night school and by his early 20s had become a teacher. He taught juvenile delinquents and children with learning disabilities and pioneered a new teaching program involving puppets and video during the course of this period. He taught for about five years before quitting and taking an extensive tour throughout Europe.

Left for London when he was 17 and worked various menial jobs before setting up an experimental theater group called "Mums Underground".

The son a trade union activist and founder of a political theater, Bergin was born and raised in Dublin.

While appearing as everyone from Robin Hood to Dracula on film or TV, he is probably best known to American audiences as the stalking, psychotic husband of Julia Roberts character in the thriller Sleeping with the Enemy .

Bergin had a "top 10" hit in Ireland with the song "The Knacker," which tells the story of a person who recycles dead horse carcasses and turns them into glue.

Was the first Irish actor to star in a film which grossed over 100 million - Sleeping with the Enemy .
