The grandnephew of South African pioneer and former president 'Paul Krüger , a task at which he excelled. Kruger was one of the industry's busiest character actors until a series of strokes brought about his retirement in the mid-1960s.

Daughter Ottilie Kruger was a stage actress who performed with Marlon Brando on Broadway in the 1944 production of "I Remember Mama." She also appeared in two plays with her father -- "Little A" and "Time for Elizabeth". She died of pancreatic cancer on May 12, 2005, at age 78.
