He has a daughter, Kate, born in 1977.

He is the younger son of Michael Havers , QC, a Conservative MP for Wimbledon, Attorney General (1979-1987) and Lord High Chancellor of England. As Attorney General, Sir Michael Havers was the prosecutor of Gerry and Giuseppe Conlon, whose story was portrayed in the film In the Name of the Father .

He now claims to regret not moving to Hollywood after the success of Chariots of Fire .

He and Gary Graham were the only two actors who were permitted to audition for the role of Captain Janeway in "Star Trek: Voyager" .

His wife, Polly Williams , was ill with cancer for four years and died on 24 June 2004.

He attended same school as singer Sarah Brightman.

He supports Fulham Football Club.

He is the nephew of Dame Elizabeth Butler-Sloss (born 1933) who in 1988 became the first woman named to the Court of Appeal and later President of the Family Division. His cousin and her son is the film producer William Butler-Sloss. He is the son-in-law of Hugh Williams and Margaret Vyner. He is the brother-in-law of Hugo Williams and Simon Williams.

In December 2003, he was starring in Francis Veber s "See U Next Tuesday", as "Pierre Brochant", with Ardal OHanlon , at the Albery Theatre in London.

He and David Niven both played A.J. Raffles, albeit 62 years apart. Havers would go on to play Niven in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers .

He grew up in Suffolk then moved to London to attend drama school between the ages of 15 and 18.

He considers the BBC miniseries of "A Horseman Riding By" to have been his big break, despite his previous starring role in the BBCs adaptation of "Nicholas Nickleby" .

He made his professional debut as Billy Owen in the radio series Mrs Dales Diary and stayed for about three years.

He grew up in Suffolk now lives in Dorset.
