He died of congestive heart failure at his home in Stockton, CA. He was found by his wife, Alberta. Caldwell had heart problems in the past and had a pacemaker inserted about a year before his death.
He was an original member of R&B group The Whispers, which began as a five-member group in 1963. The other original members were twin brothers Walter and Wallace Scott, Marcus Hutson, and Gordy Harmon. Their biggest hits include "Rock Steady" and "It Just Gets Better With Time".
