Biography

US bassist Nate Phillips grew up outside Portland and was truly influenced by jazz and early fusion, like Herbie Hancock’s "Fat Albert Rotunda," Miles Davis’s "Bitches Brew," and stuff on the CTI label. Nate spawned the lick that became “Glide” on a visit to his mother’s house in Portland. "Glide" was recorded by Pleasure, a band which Nate had joined from the start until the group disbanded back in 1981. Nate has continued to play actively, producing and/or playing with the [a=Dazz Band], The Crusaders, Jeff Lorber, Roy Ayers, Herb Alpert, [a=Richard Elliot], [a=Rick Braun], Peter White, Gerald Albright, Bobby Caldwell, Kirk Whalum, Jeff Golub, Jonathan Butler, George Duke and others. He also was part of various other bands, such as Cool'r (with Bruce Carter and Doug Lewis from Pleasure) and Franchise (with Marlon McClain from Pleasure). Nate and Marlon were both part of the Dazz Band in recent years and recorded for the trio-project "Shades Of Soul" with Jeff Lorber.
