Biography

Trained at the Royal Academy of Music, Muir first worked in the movies on the quota quickies of the 1930s. His big break came when 'Alexander Korda , as a part of a long, distinguished career as one of the most distinguished composers and musical directors in British cinema.

He was head of the music department at Denham studios under Alexander Korda and J. Arthur Rank.

Probably the most prolific conductor in British films, he conducted the orchestra for practically every classic British film from 1934 until the late 1950s.

Elder brother of Ealing film conductor Dock Mathieson.

Also conducted theatre scores, notably Tolstoys War and Peace staged at the London Phoenix from August 6 to 21, 1943. The music by Clifton Parker was performed by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Also conducted radio scores, notably Alan Burgess The Passing of Crab Village broadcast on the Home Service on 24 September 1950. The music by Clifton Parker was performed by the BBC Orchestra.

He was the son of the artist, John George Mathieson.
