Alvin is shown crossing the Mississippi River at Lansing heading westward (into Iowa), instead of eastward into Wisconsin.

In New Hampton (at the junction of US 18 and US 63), Alvin crosses West Hale Street before he approaches it.

Alvin tells his hosts that he has been on the road for more than five weeks, and he still has some distance to go at that point of the film.

However, the total distance from Laurens, Iowa to Mt.

Zion, Wisconsin is 377 miles according to Google maps.

With his lawnmower going at an estimated speed of at least 3 miles per hour and Alvin driving a moderate 10 hours per day, this would get him to his destination in less than two weeks.

While driving through West Bend, Iowa, Alvin is seen driving past the Grotto of the Redemption from right to left.

This would be north to south, or following the jog in the highway, traveling east to west.

Reviews

Like a modern-day Homer work, a twilight American reflection and the most artistically honorable Disney film in decades, isn't merely about old Alvin Straight's journey through the drowsy hamlets and bucolic boroughs of the Midwest, but about the people he discover to notice and watch over him. You'd think it was a flight of the imagination, this Blanche DuBois pipe dream, if the movie weren't rooted in a reality, supposedly anyway.

When I set out to watch "The Straight Story", I had no idea that it would become one of my favorite David Lynch films, in fact, I had expected to be rather tepid towards it. Though I love David Lynch, this film is about as far away from experimental Lynch as you can get, and when I watch Lynch, I usually want weird experimental stuff (like doppelgangers, cyclical storytelling, and personifications of death).

Simple tale of old salt (Farnsworth) riding his John Deere mower across the USA to reconcile with his long-estranged and now dying brother (Stanton). No smoke and mirrors from director Lynch, a surprising departure from his eccentric and often confronting style, with a vivid, resonating performance from Farnsworth in his swansong.

An absolute delight. From director David Lynch, The Straight Story finds the famous purveyor of the oblique on wonderfully mellow form.

Beware! The credits open with "Walt Disney Pictures present a David Lynch Film» and it's just surreal: having Lynch & Disney together for a movie, it's like having night and day at the same time.

A former Iowan, I loved how this simple story showed the home state that I love. Simple people, often elderly, with practicality over appearances strong community bonds: the expansiveness of treeless vistas with oceans of stars and clouds and corn deer: beer Ragbrai and the Catholic Church.

The concept is nice, but movie is unfulfilled for me. The adventure aspect is very slow, and while it has some meaningful dialogues it's not a very memorable drama.

The Straight Story is one of sweetest films that i ever seen and i had that feel inside body that you got when you know you just experianced something brilliant and beautiful at the same time.Lynch here proved that he isnt just a guy that makes weird and surreal films but that he is great filmmaker that has a brilliant touch in him and in this film and Elephant Man he showed that he is defienetly one of best directors of all time.

What we are watching is a cowboy movie without the horses. Fitting that in the lead is an actor who started out as a cavalry stuntman.
