What can you not say about Exile on Main St. ?
The Stones' Exile on Main Street is rightly considered to be one of the greatest rock & roll albums of all time. It is a sprawling, sloppy affair, studded with surprises and moments of brilliance.
It was a surprise to see this on Australian TV. It was unheralded but worth staying up late to see the way that the chaos of Keith Richards life was translated into an album of rare if unself-conscious depth.
Great band. Great album.
Frequently fascinating and exceptional rock-documentary on the Rolling Stones circa 1971-1972 when, in the midst of managerial and tax issues, the group left their native UK for the South of France to record their next album, "Exile on Main Street". The record (the band's first double-album) is a now-legendary mix of rock, blues, and country-&-western, tempered with Mick Jagger's passionate vocals and Keith Richards' astounding lead guitar.
Stones in Exile (2010) *** (out of 4) Nice documentary covering The Rolling Stones' 1972 album EXILE ON MAIN STREET, which today is considered one of the greatest albums ever made. We learn that the "exile" in the title was very appropriate as we learn the Stones were pretty much forced to get out of Britain due to the high taxes they were having to pay, which pretty much left them broke.
This documentary of the so-called 'making' of the great Stones' Album Exile on Main Street is a tedious and totally unconvincing and disappointing bit of science fictionalized fluff Having lived the early 70's in much the same way as the band and the hanger's on I failed to find a logical moment in the almost 50 minutes of this wingefest Much whining about conditions??? It was 1971 and life was wonderful if you had the money and the drugs and the women and the music The film is ludicrous and the statements are out of context A poor piece of work about a great band is only partially saved by the music Save 50 minutes of your life and listen to the album whilst watching the documentary-without the sound.........
Before a recent showing on UK television, a BBC warning was read out: Warning, this film contains repetitive flashing images. You bet it does.
It must be said that the Stones have brilliantly drummed up a buzz about the re-release of their classic "Exile On Main Street" album, with a combination of press interviews, personal appearances and now this high-gloss patchwork documentary but you have to concede that it's pretty much worked - the album re-topped the charts in the UK and US some 38 years after its original release.So does this new documentary serve the music satisfactorily, well, yes and no, in my opinion.
