Selected as part of the third group of fourteen astronauts in 1963, he flew in space twice. His first spaceflight was Gemini 10, in which he and command pilot John Young performed two rendezvous with different spacecraft and Collins undertook two EVAs. His second spaceflight was as the command module pilot for Apollo 11. While he orbited the Moon, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin made the first manned landing on the lunar surface.

Astronaut.

Crew member on Gemini 10 and Apollo 11 missions.

He was the command module pilot for Apollo 11, the mission that landed the first men on the moon (he stayed in orbit around the moon during the landing). Later he was the Director of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.

The 1970 Jethro Tull song "For Michael Collins, Jeffrey and Me" was dedicated to him, and talked about what he missed out on through staying on the shuttle during the moon-landing.
