Her father, Arthur Welsh, was an economic professor at University of Iowa, Indiana University, and Penn State before retiring in 1997. He died of cancer in August 2006.
She has one daughter, Maisie Higgins, born August 3, 2003 and one son, Walter Lloyd Higgins, born August 29, 2006 with husband John Michael Higgins.
