Son of Susan Bruce (Titman), a poet, and Peter Hedges , a writer, director, novelist, and playwright.

His paternal grandfather, The Rev. Robert Boyden Hedges, was an Episcopalian minister, and his maternal great-grandfather, The Rev. Dr. V. Carney Hargroves, was president of the Baptist World Alliance.

As of 2017, he has appeared in two films that have been Oscar-nominated for Best Picture: The Grand Budapest Hotel and Manchester by the Sea .

He is the first male aged 25 or under to have received an Academy Award nomination for acting since Jake Gyllenhaal for Brokeback Mountain (age at the time of nomination).
