Has been married six times, each time to a non-Polish woman.
One of his wives, Diana, was Cuban. Another wife, Doroti, was German. He was also married to a Yugoslavian woman. In current interviews , being over 80 years old, he teases he would like to marry an Eskimo lady.
During World War II, he fought in the ill-fated Warsaw Uprising. After the war, he served for a short time in the US Army in occupied Germany, before returning to Poland. When he later attempted to flee Poland, he was arrested and sent to prison. He remained a critic of the Communist regime, which is thought to have cost him leading roles over four decades.
His performance in David Lynchs movie "Inland Empire" was filmed soon after Niemczyk learned he had terminal cancer.
