Kevin's first dream was to be a cartoonist, but in later years decided to on acting. Getting his early training in Chicago, his first movie role was in _Peggy Sue Got Married .

He is the son of Patricia OConnor, a retired Chicago teacher, and James OConnor, a retired Chicago police officer.
In Van Helsing he played Dr. Frankensteins assistant Igor. He also appeared with his The Mummy co-star Brendan Fraser in Gods and Monsters , a film about James Whale , the director of the classic movies Frankenstein & Bride of Frankenstein (1935) .
