Graduated from Brooklyn College in 1962.

Best known in the 1970s for his work on daytime soap operas. Later became a recurring boss/nemesis to John Ritter on "Threes Company" .

His daughter, Allison Beth Charney, graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University and received two graduate degrees in music from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. She is an opera singer who was a national finalist in the Metropolitan Opera competition and later performed starring roles at the New York City Opera, Atlanta Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Utah Festival Opera and Opera Memphis.

In 1966 he, wife Nancy Cooperstein and David Rothenberg co-produced "Viet Rock" an anti-war play by Megan Terry that opened off-Broadway at the Martinique Theater. Jordan also appeared in the production. In 2008, he appeared in her production of "Something You Did" in New York.

He was nominated for a 1980 Joseph Jefferson Award for Actor in a Principal Role for his performance in "Talleys Folly" at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Illinois.

He was often cast as a judge, attorney, prison warden or police officer.
