Musician and writer John Erskine was born in New York City on October 5, 1879. As a child he had a strong interest in music, taking piano lessons for many years; for a time he was being taught by noted composer 'Edward MacDowell' and three volumes of memoirs. He died in New York City on June 2, 1951.
It is fatal to suppose the great writer was too wise or too profound for us ever to understand him; to think of art so is not to praise but to murder it, for the next step after that tribute will be neglect of the masterpiece.
