Trivia

Finnish music composer.

Parents are named Christian and Maria Sibelius.

Six daughters: Eva (born 1893), Ruth (1894), Kirsti (born 1898), Katarina (born 1903), Margareta (born 1908) and Heidi (born 1911).

Was mentioned in a song on the 3rd album by James McColl.

He was greatly inspired by Finnish national poems and legends, especially the "Kalevala" and the epic poem "Kullervo", both of which he drew from in his musical compositions.

He is considered one of the great nationalist composers of the world, as famous for "depicting" the country and literature of Finland in music as Edvard Grieg was for "depicting" Norway in his music.

Pictured on each of a set of three postage stamps issued by Finland 11 September 2015. Stamps were issued in booklet form. Price of each stamp on day of issue was 1.10 Euros. 2015 marked the 150th anniversary of Sibeliuss birth.

Quotes

Pay no attention to what critics say. No statue has ever been put up to,a critic.

Send me cigars. They are my food.

Music is, for me, like a beautiful mosaic which God has put together. He takes all the pieces in his hand, throws them into the world, and we have to recreate the picture from the pieces.

Music begins where the possibilities of language end.
