Merited a place in Time magazines Special Issue "Heroes of the Environment" (Leaders & Visionaries section) with a tribute penned by Oliver Morton, chief news and feature editor of "Nature" (Issue October 29, 2007).

He was awarded the CBE before being awarded the CH (Companion of Honour) in the 2003 Queens New Years Honours List for his services to Global Environmental Science.
