With Stephen Sondheim , their musical Passion (1996/I) was awarded the best musical at the 1996 London Evening Standard Theatre Award.

Won three Tony Awards for Best Book : in 1988 for "Into the Woods," in 1992, with William Finn , for "Falsettos" and in 1994 for "Passion." He has also been nominated seven other times: as Best Director and Best Book in 1984 for "Sunday on the Park with George;" as Best Director in 1988 for "Into the Woods;" in 1992 for "Falsettos," in 1994 for "Passion;" and in 2002 for a revival of "Into the Woods;" and as Best Director (Play) in 2000 for "Dirty Blonde."

He was nominated for a 2006 Joseph Jefferson Award for Director of a Musical for "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" at the Spelling Bee Chicago Theatre in Chicago, Illinois.

James Lapine won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the musical "Sunday in the Park with George" collaborating with Stephen Sondheim.
