Trivia

He founded the gospel group the Dixie Hummingbirds when he was 12, and was its leader until he retired in 1984. The group was often referred to as "The Birds" and influenced singers from Jackie Wilson to Stevie Wonder.

Their first recording came in 1939 on the Decca label. In 1942, Davis moved the group from South Carolina to Philadelphia, where they had a daily radio show which led to a long-running stint at the Cafe Society Downtown, a New York City club.

They became known to a wider audience in 1973, when they collaborated with singer-songwriter Paul Simon on "Loves Me Like a Rock". They won a Grammy for their own rendition of that song. They performed at churches and music festivals for many years afterward.

They performed with Billie Holiday, Paul Robeson, and the Golden Gate Quartet. At one point, the group was briefly renamed the "Jericho Quintet".
