One of only six cinematographers to have a star on the famous "Hollywood Walk of Fame"; the others are, Hal Mohr , Ray Rennahan , Leon Shamroy Haskell Wexler , and Conrad L. Hall.
Joined Famous Players Lasky straight out of high school. Was mentored by Cecil B. DeMille , 1923-1925. At MGM, 1929-1930, then did free-lance work in Germany, France and Hungary for several years. Joined 20th Century Fox, 1933-1934, then United Artists, 1934-1935. Did his best work under contract at Warner Brothers, 1945-1950, notably two films noir: The Two Mrs. Carrolls and Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye .
Member of A.S.C. (American Society of Cinematographers).
Met his wife Lina Basquette when he photographed her screen test for The Godless Girl . The two married during production.
