Started as an apprentice at Lenfilm. From 1928, active as director in tandem with Aleksandr Zarkhi. Their most famous work together was Baltic Deputy (Deputat Baltiki) in 1937. Directed on his own after 1950, noted especially for his adaptations of Chekhovs short stories.
