On the cast list of _The Magnificent Seven . Buchholz played the role of a doctor who befriends Benigni's character and frequently duels with him in riddles. This choice of role proved to be an echo of Buchholz' taste in choosing his projects in earlier years; the film won best foreign film that year, and was also nominated for Best Picture. Thanks to his gift for languages, Buchholz was able to dub himself in the foreign releases of the film. Buchholz continued making films and television appearances until 2002, by which time he was sixty-eight years old. He died the next year, in Berlin, of pneumonia. Berlin had been the city of his heart, and was buried there in honour of that fact. Horst Buchholz had been a renowned German actor, and had gained credibility in the United States and other countries. He was a varied performer, acting all kinds of roles in his life, but was always a proud German to the last.

Father of actor Christopher Buchholz

Lived in Paris and Switzerland with his wife Myriam Bru. They also had a daughter, Beatrice.

Landed his first stage role at 15 in a Berlin theater version of the German childrens classic "Emil and the Detectives."

In 1981, Buchholz failed as host of the dubious "Astro-Show" on German TV, which was canceled after only five shows. In the show, the popular astrologer Elizabeth Teissier had been at his side.

Called "the German James Dean " because he was type casted as rebellious teenager in the late 1950s.

Died in intensive care of pneumonia while recovering from a broken thighbone.

Made his Broadway debut with "Cherie" in 1959.

Son of a shoemaker, he dropped out of school so he could take acting lessons.

Christopher Buchholz directed the movie Horst Buchholz... mein Papa , which deals with his fathers life and their relationship.

Is buried in the Heerstrae Cemetery, Berlin.

During the filming of One, Two, Three , he was seriously hurt in a car accident that prevented him from shooting for over two months.

Is one of only two German actors to play Johann Strauss Jr. He did so in The Great Waltz . The other German was Alfred Abel in the silent film Heut spielt der Strauss .

His participation in Billy Wilder s One, Two, Three was the reason that he was unable to be in Lawrence of Arabia . Omar Sharif later received his first- and thus far, only- Oscar nomination for playing the role originally intended for Buchholz.

He received tribute as part of the annual "In Memoriam" segment at the 75th Annual Academy Awards, 2003.

Was to star as Charles Wilder in the 1977 The Cat and the Canary but pulled out at the 11th hour. The producers seriously considered suing him for his actions.

Having established himself in theatre and radio work and able to speak several languages, he got into film work by dubbing voices on foreign films. One of these was Walt Disneys Pinocchio which, due to the war, wasnt released in Germany until 1951 and he dubbed the voice of Lampwick.

Considered for Fallada and Bukovsky in Lifeforce.

Amongst many others, he turned down the lead role in Per un pugno di dollari . The role went on to make Clint Eastwood a movie star.
