Biography

In retrospect, he was considered an actor's actor to be sure. Renowned theater performer George Grizzard would make his biggest impact under the Tony-winning Broadway lights in a career spanning over five decades. Born an only child on April 1, 1928, in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, George Cooper Grizzard, Jr. was raised . He died the following year, on October 2, 2007, of complications from lung cancer at a New York City hospital. His sole survivor is long-time partner William Tynan.

Won Broadways 1996 Tony Award as Best Actor (Play) for a revival of Edward Albee s "A Delicate Balance." He had two prior nominations as Best Supporting or Featured Actor : in 1959 for "The Disenchanted" and in 1961 for "Big Fish, Little Fish.".

According to Grizzards New York Times obituary, his only survivor was his longtime romantic partner William Tynan.

He considered himself primarily a stage actor.

Until his death, Grizzard and Tynan maintained a country home together in Litchfield County, Connecticut. Neighbors included Joan Rivers, Bill Blass among other entertainment industry luminaries.

His finest movie performance is usually regarded in Otto Preminger s study of American politics, Advise & Consent .

His father was an accountant.

His first theatre role was in 1945 when he played a miner in Emlyn Williamss The Corn is Green at the Crossroads Theatre in Virginia.

His Broadway debut was in The Desperate Hours , Joseph Hayes tense thriller about a family imprisoned in their home and terrorized by escaped convicts.

Grizzard received his first Tony nomination (as best featured actor) for his performance in The Disenchanted , based on Budd Schulbergs biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald, and he received a second nomination in 1961 for his work in Hugh Wheelers wry comedy, Big Fish, Little Fish.
