Following his work on The Bridge on the River Kwai , MGM briefly considered him for a lead role in its 1959 re-make of Ben-Hur , the roles which were ultimately filled by Charlton Heston , portraying Judah Ben-Hur, and Stephen Boyd , portraying Messala, and like in "Kwai," would also have been co-starring with Jack Hawkins.
