Composer. Grandson of philosopher Moses Mendelssohn (1729-1786). Father of historian Karl Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1838-1897) and chemist Paul Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1841-1880).
Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind erected a plaque in Mendelssohns memory at his birthplace, and established the Mendelssohn Scholarship Foundation, which makes an award to a British composer every two years. Biographers still debate the true nature of their relationship.
