His body was cremated; per his request, his ashes were scattered over Broadway.
Prolific on Broadway between 1918 and 1928. Subsequently concentrated on screen acting and also worked as a dialogue director in the early 1940s.
He appeared in four Best Picture Academy Award winners: All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) , Grand Hotel (1932/I) , The Great Ziegfeld and You Cant Take It with You .
