Irish actor
Character actor, who started in small roles in British films, alternating in both comedy and drama. He had a rare lead as a town drunk in Time, Gentlemen, Please! (1952) , after which he subsided once again to lesser roles. He only made his stage debut at the Abbey Theatre half way through his career, but became busier from the mid-60s with engagements at the Old Vic and the National Theatre. On screen, he was seen in just about anything, from war movies to horror. He even popped up in a tiny role as a general in "Star Wars Episode IV" in 1977.
