Daughter of Lew Fields

Younger sister of Joseph Fields and Herbert Fields.

Pictured on one of a set of four 32 US commemorative postage stamps in the Legends of American Music series, issued 11 September 1996, celebrating American songwriters. Others honored in this issue are Harold Arlen , Johnny Mercer , and Hoagy Carmichael.

Mother of David Lahm. Mother-in-law of Judy Kreston.

Won two Tony Awards in 1959 for "Redhead": as, with three collaborators, Best Authors and as one of the book writers for the Best Musical winner. In 1966, she received two similar nominations for "Sweet Charity:" as Best Composer and Lyricist with Cy Coleman and for lyrics as part of a Best Musical nomination. Another nomination came in 1974 for "Seesaw," this time for Best Score, namely Cy Coleman s music and her lyrics.

Inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1971.
