Older brother of Glyn Houston

He and his brother and sister were raised by their aunt.

Has a sister, Jean.

During World War II served with the RAF as a rear gunner and radio officer.

Before successfully auditioning for the theatre, he was briefly employed as a coal miner at Glamorganshire in Wales.

Son of a professional footballer.

As a school boy toured with the Boys Theatre. Later he was a member of The Pilgrim Players then Oxford Repertory Theatre.

He was considered for the roles of Dr. Armstrong, Dr. Bukovsky and Sir Percy Heseltine in Lifeforce .

Both he and his younger brother Glyn Houston appeared in Hammer films: he appeared in The Viking Queen while his brother appeared in The Secret of Blood Island and The Brigand of Kandahar .

Like his character in The Longest Day , he served in the RAF during World War II.
