Biography

Charlie Jones is a British bassist, songwriter and record producer. He has toured and recorded with Robert Plant, Page and Plant, Strange Sensation, and Goldfrapp, among others. Jones is from the Bristol area of the UK and was married to Robert Plant's daughter Carmen Plant, but they separated in 2010. Prior to him joining Robert Plant, and later Page and Plant, he was a member of Violent Blue with session guitarist Neil Taylor. Jones received a Grammy Award in 2009 as a co-writer of the song "Please Read the Letter" from the album "Raising Sand" by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. Jones has toured and recorded playing both electric and double bass but is most associated with playing a clear acrylic bass. He is currently bassist for Goldfrapp. Outside of that he works as a session musician, producer and composer.

He has served as a play-by-play announcer for 45 years.

Announcer for the AFL (1960-1964 on ABC, 1965-1969 on NBC) and the NFL after that until 1997 (NBC).

Jones described (at NBC) 28 different sports, including golf, Wimbledon tennis, figure skating, and numerous events for NBCs "Sportsworld" . In addition, Jones called track-and-field action at the Seoul Olympics in 1988 and swimming, diving, and water polo at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.

Jones has described more than 25 college football bowl games, including the 1987 Sunkist Fiesta Bowl national championship game, 1986 World Cup soccer from Mexico City, and the 1987 World Championships of Track and Field in Rome.

Play-by-play announcer for the Cincinnati Reds (1973, 1974) and Colorado Rockies (1993-1995).

Recipient of the Pete Rozelle Award (which rewards exceptional longtime contributions to radio and TV in pro football) in 1997.

Served as the lead voice for the rowing and flatwater-canoeing/kayak competitions at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

He earned his Bachelors degree from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and his law degree from the University of Arkansas.

Selected in 2007 as a member of the Texas Radio Hall of Fame.

He is in his second season providing regional play-by-play for ABCs college football.
